I one hundred percent believe that we have a moral obligation to take action to protect the future of a planet in peril. In a perfect world, I would have the people who were responsible for the most damage to our planet taking the most action to try and protect the future of our planet. I think it is unfair that certain countries or certain generations have caused a majority of the damage but all the countries and generations of individuals have to suffer and try to clean up the damage that has been caused in the past. I believe that people need to learn from their mistakes. Countries and generations getting to cause all this damage and then just push the problems they have caused onto other people who are not as responsible is completely unfair. I am most definitely not trying to say my generation is not responsible for damage, because I know we are responsible for some. I just wish we would not have allowed all this damage to accumulate without really thinking about doing anything to fix it/ prevent more damage from happening until the past few decades.
Unfortunately though, this is the reality we are facing so we need to do the best we can now to protect the planet from future damage. I believe that we as citizens can only do so much until ‘smarter and greener’ technology becomes available to us. Sure, things like the Tesla car are now on the market but they are extremely expensive and not really practical for a middle class citizen to just go out and buy. What we can do though are things like recycling, practicing sustainability in our water, food, etc use, and reducing our fuel emission by either carpooling or walking when it is possible. We can also donate to organizations that have the ability to make bigger impacts than we can on our own. There are also many volunteer opportunities that individuals can participate in that range anywhere from litter clean up to petitioning companies who have extremely unsustainable practices.
Petitioning major corporations who practice unsustainable behaviors can really make a big impact on the future of our planet. Major corporations who produce their products in large factories have had such a large (usually negative) impact on our environment. In the past, they have just done what was best and most profitable for themselves without really considering the effects their actions have on the environment. Nowadays though, ‘going green’ has become a very important thing to our world and we expect corporations to think about their footprints before making decisions that will negatively affect our planet. I believe stricter laws should be put on corporations to force them to be more sustainable. If they cannot afford to be sustainable with the income they are operating on, they should have to reduce their company down so they are able to operate sustainability.
In terms of environmental groups who work in France, there are actually quite a few. There are also quite a few groups that are based out of France who serve France as well as the surrounding area. One of these groups is called Group for the Environment, Renewable Energy and Solidarity. This group’s focus is on, “Preserving the environment and improving the livelihood of the poor” (GRES). A few of their projects include working in countries to reduce wood consumption in houses, hosting workshops on deforestation and forest degradation, speaking at the Global Citizen Consultation on Climate and Energy, and launching information platforms on good practices in carbon offsetting, etc.
This group started out smaller but eventually acquired a following and is now making big impacts on the environment as a result. If more people were to just start a little group dedicated to preserving the environment, they could end up making a bigger difference than they may have ever imagined. This could be a big key to our planet’s future.
